After the Blight, the refugees in Altheria used many different cultural systems
for telling time and marking the year. The Historians took it upon themselves to
standardize this into the New Altherian calendar that balanced familiarity and
ease of use for the many different cultures of refugees.
Common units of time are familiar: years, days, hours, minutes, and seconds are
all the same length as in the real world. Weeks and months however are
different, and were the focus of much of the Historians' work to unify various
calendar systems. Shimmerhaven's former calendar, with its focus on cosmopolitan
appeal, is widely considered the nearest resemblance.
A week in Aelandris has 8 days. The days of the week, in order, are:
* Firesday
* Earthsday
* Watersday
* Windsday
* Mountainday
* Forestday
* Riversday
* Cloudsday
A year in Aelandris is divided into 13 months. The first 12 months each have 30
days and are grouped into four seasons of three months each. These seasonal
times roughly match the real world. The final month of the year is an
intercalary month with only 5 days (6 in a leap year). This extra month was
added to correct the length of the year while keeping other months a consistent
length. The year begins on the first day of winter, after the last day of
Auspice.
The months of the year, in order, are as follows:
* Winter: Frostfall, Midwinter, Winterswane
* Spring: Springbloom, Midspring, Springswane
* Summer: Nearsummer, Midsummer, Summerswane
* Autumn: Harvest, Midautumn, Autumnswane
* Intercalary: Auspice
Years are numbered relative to the commonly-agreed upon year that the Blight
arrived, though Historians will note that there is some scholarly debate as to
the exact date. Years before this event are marked as B.B. (Before the Blight),
and years after are marked as A.B. (After the Blight).
